Steps to Get APRS Up and Running On the Yaesu FT3DR

Steps To Enable APRS and Get It Functional

  • Long press A/B and ensure you are in B
  • Press V/M button to get into VFO mode
  • Long press DISP, then press APRS
    • -> 8 APRS MUTE -> ON
    • -> 10 APRS RINGER (All ON by default) Setting some to OFF to stop constant beeping. Turn off more as needed
      • Mic-E -> OFF
      • POSITION -> OFF
      • WEATHER -> OFF
      • OBJECT -> OFF
      • ITEM -> OFF
      • STATUS -> OFF
    • -> 14 BEACON INTERVAL -> Set to some interval. Test = 30 sec, longer for being stationary
    • -> 15 BEACON STATUS TEXT ->
      • ** S.TXT -> ON
      • ** TX RATE -> 1/1
      • ** TEXT -> <enter some message>
    • -> 16 BEACON TX -> AUTO
    • -> 20 GPS POWER -> GPS ON
    • -> 23 CALLSIGN (APRS) -> -> DISP -> <enter callsign> -> Right arrow x2 -> – 7
    • -> 24 MY POSITION -> GPS to track automatically
    • -> 25 MY SYMBOL -> /j for Jeep
    • -> 26 POSITION COMMENT -> ONLY USE EMERGENCY IF NEEDED
      • “Off Duty”, but choose your status, such as “In Service”
    • -> 28 TIME ZONE -> Set for wherever you are
    • -> 4 APRS MODEM -> 1200bps (AFSK)
      • Alternately use 9600 (GMSK)
  • Choose APRS channel
    • 144.39000 / Simplex / FM

To Test

  • GPS: Short press DISP -> Click on the compass, should see satellites, etc.
  • APRS: F Button -> S.LIST
  • Check to make sure you are showing up on https://aprs.fi

Steps To Add A Repeater To Yaesu FT3D

These directions are raw and will be tested the next time I need to add a repeater. The main point will be to print these out on a small card and keep it with me for when I’m away from my computer.

Press and hold the A/B button to get into edit mode
If the upper left of the frequency does not have VFO, press the V/M key

Make sure the Automatic Repeater Shift is turned on

  • DISP -> Config -> 14 RPT ARS -> ON -> Back

Enter Repeater frequency. Should have a + or – above frequency in display. If not, manually enter offset.

Manually (if needed) enter the Offset direction

  • DISP -> CONFIG -> 15 RPT SHIFT -> Select +RPT or -RPT -> Back

Manually (if needed) enter Offset

  • DISP -> CONFIG -> 16 RPT SHIFT FREQ -> Back
  • ALTERNATE Path: DISP -> SIGNALING – 12 TONE SQL FREQ -> -> Back

Set Tone Squelch

  • “F” button -> SQTYP -> TONE TN -> Back
  • ALTERNATE Path: DISP -> SIGNALING -> 11 SQL TYPE -> TONE TN -> Back

Set Tone

  • “F” button -> CODE -> -> Back
  • ALTERNATE Path: DISP -> CONFIG -> 16 RPT SHIFT FREQ -> -> Back

Save To Memory Location

  • Hold F Key -> Select channel number -> M.WRITE -> Name it -> DISP
